Bright and dark, warm and
cool, these elements of lighting play a pivotal role in movies, manipulating
the subconscious mind of the viewer into believing the fantasy of the director.
Hamlet demands the best of a designer, the ability to create a space bright
enough for camera but brining the darkness and gloomy air into the theatre and
illuminating the minds of the audience to the subconscious messages of the play.
In Zeffireli and Almereyda version of Hamlet the designers must balance the
complex demands of lighting a show with a meaning that is difficult to over
emphasize with the importance to minimize distractions to the audience, a challenge
neither designer fully succeeds in alone.
