"The horror, the horror." These words uttered by Mr. Kurtz in Heart of Darkness could have easily been written down in a World War soldier 's diary. Heart of Darkness eerily foreshadows both of the upcoming great wars with the atrocities in Africa providing a mirror for those soon to take place in Europe. Both the novel and the wars depict an 'enlightened' Europe that claims to bring the advance knowledge and civility to society but at the same time can brutally slaughter their own people. And reveal a society that fails to admit to itself the truth of its brutality.
